Brief History of the School
A few historical data from the school life
1860s – considering to establish a Czech grammar school in Přerov, a request written and sent to Vienna
July 1870 – another written request to establish a grammar school, the town council agrees to bear the costs of installing and operating
3rd October 1870 - in the parish church of St. Lawrence the first school year inaugurated
17th July 1876 - the foundation stone of the school building laid
11th November 1877- Construction of the building is completed
13th November 1877 - start of classes in the new building
Summer 1877 - the first Maturita Exams in the Grammar School in Přerov
28th October 1885 – Jakub Škoda, the first headmaster of the school, died after an illness
1901 – the first girl started to attend the school
1911 - electric lighting installed in the school
1914 - 1918 - alternate teaching with classes in the morning and afternoon introduced, including Saturdays, many teachers and some students called to the army
autumn 1919 - teaching moved back into the school building, school status changed to grammar school
March 1939 - the building occupied by German troops and converted into barracks
1939 - 1945 -repression by the German authorities, reducing the number of students, reducing the quality and range of learning
28th May 1945 - start of teaching after the war
1953 – according to the Soviet model, grammar school cancelled and eleven-year school established
1961 – general secondary school established, after 1966 the school again
changes its legal status to a four-year grammar school
October 1970 – 100-year anniversary of the school
1978 - one-storey extension above the gymnasium completed with a language room and a type-writing classroom in it
1984 - four-storey extension in Havlíčkova St. completed with a staff room, headmaster´s office, deputies´office and several classrooms
1991 – besides the four-year study, seven-year study established
1992 - school is connected to the Internet
19th October 1993 – the official name of the school changed to Gymnázium Jakuba Škody v Přerově
1995 - seven-year study changed to eight-year study
1995 – 125-year school anniversary attended by current and former teachers and many graduates
spring - summer 1996 - three new classrooms and two teachers´cabinets established in a new attic
1997 - during catastrophic floods in Přerov, the entire ground floor of the school, including the gymnasium and the artificial surface of the playground, completely destroyed
2003 - classroom JU2 for modern language teaching modernized
2004 - Biology classroom and language laboratory JU1 modernized
